The ever-expanding world of craft beer always turns up new gems. This week some of the most respected names in San Diego hospitality revealed their latest project, URBN St. Brewing Company. The recently launched brewery is a scion of the popular URBN Coal Fired Pizza.
El Cajon, CA is the site of San Diego’s newest brewery. Lead by Jon Mangini (founder of URBN Restaurants Inc.), respected head brewer Callaway Ryan, and executive chef Alex Carballo (both formerly of Stone Brewing Co.). This casual eatery boasts the same industrial feel and authentic New Haven style thin-crust pizza found at the other locations, just add beer.
Ryan’s interest in beer started at a young age while on a trip to Germany. He spent years pursuing brewing as a career. Giving him the opportunity to work with some of the nation’s most noteworthy breweries including; Stone Brewing Co., Surly Brewing Co., Real Ale Brewing, and Live Oak Brewing Co., now he’s working to create recipes that are distinctly his own. “Being paid to brew your own beer is pretty much every brewer's dream,” says Callaway. “I love the communal aspect of beer, and I can’t wait to have a bar full of people coming together around something I produced."
While the award winning pizza is the kitchen’s focus, Chef Carballo plans to create a playful twist on pub favorites like wings, sausage made from scratch, and other comfortable selections. Featuring 40 beer taps, you’ll be able to choose from craft beer made on-site or a local favorite from guest breweries. The team hopes to include educational craft beer dinners through a partnership with a wide variety of San Diego breweries.
It shouldn’t be long before URBN is considered a staple of El Cajon.
