Clad in their best pretzel necklaces, the beer community came together for the sixth time for the annual OC Brew Ha Ha, at Irvine Lake. And there was a lot to celebrate. With over 90 breweries and cideries, a gang of food trucks, cigar lounge, skateboard half-pipe, and a live performance by The Aggrolites, OC Brew Ha Ha’s main event didn’t disappoint.
Sierra Nevada, prepared for the harvest season, came with a very interesting Oktoberfest. Working closely with Brauhaus Riegele of Augsburg, the California brewery came up big with a beer worthy to celebrate with. Keeping with the German theme, Thirty-Two North Brewing Co. offered a sweet and tart Berliner-Weisse, called Peach Landfall--great stuff. More sampling was required to confirm the awesomeness of this brew, and it turned up positive. Hangar 24 brought a special release this time: Pugachev’s Cobra, imperial stout--definitely worth the long line, as this was extremely refined and a treat.
Then we discovered 101 Cider House. Among the cideries was a brand we hadn’t tried before, who came with some pretty inventive and creative ciders. Truly unique, Cactus Red was made with cactus pears and agave from southern California, which provided a very cool red color and was absolutely refreshing and delicious. They also had another cider that was black. Made with apples, activated charcoal, agave and lemon, Black Dog was something to behold. We look forward to much more from 101 Cider House.
After hitting up Slater’s 50/50, who were serving up whole burgers this time, rather than just the quarters they normally do, we found ourselves grabbing a South County IPA, the event’s collaboration brew. Keeping up the south-end of the OC’s rich craft brew scene, Left Coast, Pizza Port, and Artifex knocked it out of the park with this one. Well done, gentlemen. This can also be found in stores like Total Wine. Look for the skateboarding hop monster with an IPA in his hand and a crazy look in his eye. We enjoyed the hell out of another great Brew Ha Ha, and for this we thank Cameron Collins and the entire OC Brew Ha Ha Productions crew. And as always, very much looking forward to the next event. Cheers!
