Come on in to Galco's. We're open seven days a week and are located on York Boulevard in HIghland Park, just a quick drive from Pasadena, Glendale and downtown Los Angeles. Devoted to the art of soda pop and supporting the small businesses behind each bubbly drink, Galco’s Soda Pop Stop features more than 500 flavors of soda at its Los Angeles storefront and nationwide through its website at www.sodapopstop.com. Beginning in 1897 as an Italian grocery store, Galco’s changed “flavors” when son John F. Nese took helm of his father’s store in 1995 and lined the shelves with classic, small-batch, exotic and hard-to-find sodas. With a mission to support small soda makers, Galco’s motto is “Freedom of Choice” which mirrors Nese’s determination that customers have the right to choose from more than just a handful of mass-produced, big-business selections. “We’re little business helping other little businesses,” says Nese.

Cool little shop

Galco's is mainly known as a soda store. They operate a online mail-order soda business at sodapopstop.com. Soda takes up 60% of the store, 10% is old fashioned candy, with beers and wine filling out the rest. They have one of the larger selections of Belgian beers in the area. They have quite a bit of imported stuff you might have trouble finding elsewhere. Their selection of local brew is a weak point. Not that they don't have good beer (a few Ballast Point including Sculpin, a few selections from the Bruery, 5-6 varieties from Stone) but it's nothing spectacular. Prices are also going to be a few bucks higher than elsewhere. 70% of the beer is at room temp so keep that in mind if that bothers you. They have a really good selection of glassware, most of it from Europe.

The owner is knowledgeable enough but I have yet to find anybody else in the store who knows beer. They also have a deli counter and the sandwiches are pretty good and my usual reason for stopping in. Overall, if you're in the area it's worth checking out but there is no reason to go out of your way, unless you're looking for a unique soda.

Amazing selection and family friendly!

I love this store for it's many and varied beer selection, including the large refrigerated area! My boyfriend loves it for the aisles and aisles of obscure sodas (he's super into root beer).
They also have a make-your-own soda bar that we've yet to try (it's only been 2 visits so far!), but it seems to have lots of syrup choices and is a neat activity for kids and kids-at-heart.
They even have a lot of ciders, if you're into that, and some wines, sakes and champagnes.
I recommend going in with a budget or bottle-count limit, or you could be in serious trouble!
