Angel City Brewery is excited to be part of the brewing renaissance of Downtown LA by bringing old-world, small-batch, craft brewing to the new world of the expanding Arts District. We are committed to the continued growth and revitalization of our neighborhoods by being an interactive and supportive partner to the arts and business communities, as well as the burgeoning craft beer movement in Los Angeles.

Angel City Brewing was founded in 1997. Starting modestly, Angel City quickly became a leader in the LA craft beer scene. In 2004 Angel City bought an 8,000 barrel German-made brewery in Alpine Village near Los Angeles on EBay! and lovingly restored the facility. In late 2010, Angel City relocated the brewery to the historic John A. Roebling Building in LA’s Downtown Arts District. The vision was, and remains, to give this great city a great brewery.

In 2011, Angel City Brewery was acquired by Alchemy & Science, a craft beer collaboration led by Alan Newman and Stacey Steinmetz, formerly of Magic Hat Brewing Company. Brewing at Angel City began in April of 2012.

The brewery restoration project is in full swing and includes a bar/meetinghouse, brewery and sampling tours, and event space. Although the doors won’t be open to the public until this fall, you can find Angel City on draft at a number of locations around downtown LA.

A Brilliant Nostalgic Feel

I drove up to Angel City from Orange County, a few miles from the brewery I crossed a bridge and enjoyed a gorgeous view of the downtown LA skyline. Located in the downtown art district, you should see the brewery once the brewery sees you. I'm referring to the giant eyes located on the building itself. I slipped into the small parking lot just before the crowd arrived.

The atmosphere is that of a classic hollywood theater from the 40's. With their retro design expanding from their branding and logo into their custom bar, seating area, and adjacent art gallery. This is definitely a place anybody can hang out for hours on end. Although you'll only find ACB on tap at the bar, they do offer a growing selection starting with their flagship ales; Eureka! Wit and Angelino IPA and extending into seasonal and special releases. I took a look at their new barrel aging area, which should start kegging around winter.

I recommend starting with a flight of everything and going back for pints of your favorites.
