Great Gastropub

This place has one of the best burgers ever! Extensive selection of import beers, which can get a little expensive. Great atmosphere, but can be hard to get a seat in here due to size and location in downtown Claremont. Atmosphere and food are great.

Great Gastropub

The Back Abbey was the winner of our first ever Gastropub Fightclub against The Salted Pig in Riverside. It is a perfect example of what a gastropub should be. The food is excellent and they have a large variety of beers from Belgium, Germany, and the UK. Atmosphere is warm and inviting. The interior is smaller and has limited seating, but the patio has space for larger groups.

Large selection of Belgian beers. Fantastic cheese platter, the honey comb is delectable. Fries cooked in duck fat and severed with three yummy sauces.

Back Abbey

If you're looking for authentic Belgian beer with a matching glass for every type they have, this is the place for you. Incredible brew, amazing food, great location. When I can afford it, I go here as much as I can...

A Monastary for Belgian beer.

Nestled away in a back lot, wedged between a classic movie theater and a Spanish styled Hotel, the name The Back Abbey is a perfect description of what this place is. The exterior is styled after a small Spanish mission. Fashioned with a roughly 20ft long, raw cut wood bar, cemented table tops, industrial incandescent light fixtures and rusted corrugated ceilings, the interior follows a rustic industrial impression.

During the week it is fairly easy to find a seat within the cozy monastery or it's exterior. The weekend's are a whole different story. Since seating is based on "find a spot where ever you can", It can get kind of frustrating. Usually there is a small line forming outside the patio. It's not uncommon for a vulture (Entitled bastard patrons with no common courtesy) to swoop in and take your seat, leaving you feeling like some snake just took your parking spot. Live through these few moments of pain, the food is worth it ...trust me.

Back in the corner is a tiny kitchen that cranks out some of the most amazing appetizers, burgers, steaks, sandwiches and salads in the world. My recommendations:
Soft Bavarian Pretzel - A soft warm doughy pretzel with sprinkled coarse salt, served with Augustijn beer aioli.
The Back Abbey Burger - A medium rare (don't order it well done) dry aged patty, rested upon a brioche bun topped with mustard aioli, caramelized onions, micro greens (four leaf clovers), aged Gouda and Niman Ranch bacon.
Pomme Frites - Fries fried in duck fat then in canola oil. Comes with 3 dipping sauces: Horseradish chive, Roumelade and the old school favorite, Ketchup.

Beer selections? Of course, the reason why you came to this site. They have a phenomenal list of European beers primarily located in the Beer Belt of Europe (Belgium). The back abbey also offers a few selections from Unibroue. (Canadian Brewery). The majority of their selections are bottled, however, tap lovers do not fret, The Back Abbey offers 25-30 beers on tap.

Located in downtown Claremont, this small gastropub manages to get lost among the taller buildings. But don't let the size fool you, perfect for groups or to simply venture out on your own this place is really a diamond in the rough. Their impressive selection of Belgian draft beers and extensive bottle list is perfect for the import beer lover. Just don't expect any local craft beers because that's not what this place is about. Their about great Belgian beer and culinary masterpieces, whether you end up with an amazing burger or a cheese plate you will no doubt be happy with your choice.
