The Alchemist has been brewing Heady Topper since 2003. This Double IPA is not intended to be the strongest or most bitter DIPA. It is brewed to give you wave after wave of hop flavor without any astringent bitterness. We brew Heady Topper with a proprietary blend of six hops – each imparting its own unique flavor and aroma. Take a big sip of Heady and see what hop flavors you can pick out. Orange? Tropical Fruit? Pink Grapefruit? Pine? Spice? There is just enough malt to give this beer some backbone, but not enough to take the hops away from the center stage.

To the head

When I first drank this one, and I didnt know which beer I was drinking due to a blind taste test, some of the first words out of my mouth was "to the head", because the rush of hops immediately punches you in the teeth. Ive never really had an IPA like this before cause its very easy to drink but its just sooooo dank. The citrus notes really help get to that drinkability and damn is it something your gonna want more of....Im sorry I aint got nothin super smart to say....other than, get this drink this (from the can), and smash it over your head....cheers

Ok, it is the best.

I was lucky enough to get a fresh 4 pack on a beer trade from some guy for 2 Plinys. I was super stoked knowing not many people get to try it and it really did live up to the hype. First can I had to pour into a glass dispite everything, ok it's got some sediment from the hops but that's ok, the aroma is amazing color is the same of any west coast ipa but with the added sediment, flavor was intense perfect nothing like the usual east coast ipas that I've had. The main difference for me was the slick oily mouth feel from the hops that you don't get with Pliny, and I did like it. Other 3 I shared. Yeah it's awesome, but I'm sure a lot if it has to do with how hard it is to get out here in the west and the east finally has a damn good ipa. But, Pliny the younger is the best period.

World class

Poured into a blue solo cup alongside Pliny the Elder. Heady topper has some floaties that would give it away otherwise. They are quite a bit different though and the Pliny's lingering astringency gave it away. That being said, Heady held it's own against what I consider to the the #1 beer in the world, PtE. Aroma is strong grapefruit and citrus hops. I think this is where it truly shines. The flavor is is much less aggressive than you would expect from the nose. It's not nearly as bitter as the Pliny. Incredibly drinkable.
The first time I had this beer I was disappointed but that probably had to do with the hype surrounding it. Doing a blind side by side with another world class IPA turned me around. It's worthy of "top 5 IPA in the world" status. This beer isn't real easy to get in California but it's definitely worth trading for.
